oil vs. gas

The Biasi SG is a great boiler. I have found the Heat Wise SU-2A to be an excellent choice and easy to work on as is their oil burner. As the Heat Wise factory is on Long Island you shouldn't have any proiblem finding out about the poroduct from your local heating techs. I have not worked with the Riello gas. I recommend that you NOT bury an oil tank. Painting it white will reduce condensation as will putting it on the shady side of the house. Covers are available that incorporate oil catchment in case of a spill as well as increasing the asthetics. As for oil Vs. gas just run the numbers on price per BTU. As you have been advised, if you set up for oil and gas prices improve relative to oil buy a gas burner and put the oil burner on the shelf for the next time the prices change.

oil vs. gas
just recently moved into a new house and indeed doing a lot of homework before upgrading the boiler system. In my old house I have maintained my oil heat systems for 9 years. one problem i face is that if i stick with oil I have no choice but to keep the tank where it is. Due to the ground floor future renovations we wanted to relocate the washer and dryer location to where the oil tank is now.(in the basement). If i decide to bury a tank, am i inviting any future problems? Alot of opinions I have been getting is...., If it aint there(in the ground) Dont put it there! I realize that I could put the tanks above ground put some nice fencing around it to hide it, but due to more temperature swings I would believe you would have more condensation problems than compared to an underground tank. Second situation i face Is that there is natural gas in the house used for the seperate water heater only. I could go all gas, illiminate the tank altogether. BTU For BTU isnt gas more expensive? Third concern is gas equipment, I heard that the type of burners in gas equipment that is more like a barbeque burner or bunsen burners are inefficient but if i went with say... a Biasi SG series boiler with a "GUN" style gas burners such as the Riello R-200 or Heatwise SU-2A, that these type of gas systems are far superior and efficient. Is this true? Also,If anyone Knows the codes about tank burial in Suffolk county Long Island SPECIFICALLY Port Jefferson Village I would appreciate the information. Happy Holidays to all!0 -
I'd stay with an oil boiler
then if gas gets cheaper than oil and stays that way, swap the oil burner for a conversion gas burner. Not sure what codes are used in your area, but in Baltimore we find many oil tanks under wooden porches. This would be a good place if permitted in your area and if you have such a porch.

While the Baisi's a great boiler
You can't make a it condensing boiler so you'd never be able to get the efficencies of a modulating/condensing gas boiler. I'd say convert to gas but not with Keyspan prices! At least LI is a big oil market and there's plenty of dealers. They've got those great enclosures for 275 gal tanks or build a shed around it. Put a heat tape around the bottom take off line and get a Riello BF. I think they have fuel line heaters also.0 -
Puting in a boiler with a conversion gun can be a few persentige points higher but make sure you find someone who can fix it 24/7.The only thing that must work in yuor home is your boiler. The inital extra cost of the job and repairs can some times be grater the savings.Your utility will give you a boiler for 600.00 or they will give you the heatwise gun and some cash.If you are not happy put the oil back in.I have serviced gas for over 30 years I have an oil fired type boiler with a conversion burner in it eff. is higher and it is a realo gas gun that in 20 years has never had a part on it changed.0
