One thing...
It is NOT always a case of just being a deadbeat...Quite often (as in my case) it is a case of non-custodial discrimination where the office of recovery services gladly collects an out-of-state child support order, but refuses to do a thing about witheld visitation. Let's just enforce this paragraph, but not this one!!!How unfair is that???? For a LONG time, I went underground, just could not bear to fund her actions, but it takes thousands to bring a custodial interfearance case, and it is easier to just not pay...gives a person just a bit of a sense of justice, although we all know it is not right. Since I pay, and being self employed with everything not in my name, they take the payments I send...shouldn't have been this way but here it is....shame on both of us.

Is some better than none?
We hired a great guy who has been a real dynamo - a spark plug. He'd been a handyman type who caught our attention during the interview process. Our gut feelings were proven correct.
Then comes past deeds and the courts.
Turns out he's got kids from a past marriage in another state. They've attached his wages to the tune of 60%. He can't afford to live on what's left over, so now he's got to quit and go back into the underground economy.
Everyone loses. We lose a great apprentice who has exhibeted great potential. He loses the possibility of advancing his skills and salary while learning the trades. His ex loses. his kids lose the support.
Seems like a real crime that the courts can't temper the zeal for garnishing wages. Wouldn't some be better than none? Good grief! If everyone intent on sapping his earnings would stop for a moment and contemplate his earnings potential in the trades, they might have understood they were shooting themselves in the foot.

If he seems worth it, try intervening on his behalf to the courts. Just beware. If he skipped out on his kids he'd probably have no problem skipping out on you. Both me and my business partner have stuck our knecks out for people in similar situations--most often we're burned, but occasionally they get things straightend out and accept their responsibilities.
At least you offer a "real" job. Best I can offer is little better than Wal-Mart so I'm TRULY happy when the successes move on.0 -
Dead Beat Dad
All to often a guy ducks out of the main stream to avoid paying his responsibilities. Next thing back payments acrue then you have the large garnishment. If more guys bite the bullet and face their responsibilitese it wouldn't be quite as bad. No, I'm not a goody too shoes I have been divorced twice.

While child support collection laws are necessary, its clear that they have driven many back underground. Should limit it to 25-30% of net wages. Can you subcontract some work out to him and pay him at the end of each work day, day labor style? How about hiring him through day labor?0 -
Dave, did he tell you about this
when you hired him? If not, he was dishonest with you, so you don't need him.
In most companies that I'm familiar with, failing to disclose things like this during the hiring process is cause for termination.
