week ago it was -43 or so outside the house , two days ago 46 above ! well dontcha Know the roads are a particular type of cannine to deal with ....yesterday it snowed,to day the temps dropped back down a Ways maybe ten twelve below....there is a good case to be made for snow and ice melt at major intersections .... good thing you are dialing in the test round two :)

it may be that the blue board (pink, green ) will make more of an "impression" deeper into winter....

it sure looks like there is a way to make even newer forms of insulation, just from first go round on round 1 of the tests.

when i do measures and balances a constant and at least three seperate runs gives pretty good info. as a friend used to say even bad chemistry is good if you have plenty of it *~/:)

  • Snowmelt insulation trials, TAKE 2, Set back trials TAKE 1

Like a wino on Larimer street, "There's HOBO's EVERYWHERE!!"

I went back to the snowmelt insulation trial site and replaced the two questionable sensors and reconnected and programmed the 4 hobos there. It's snowing right now, so accumulative data is pouring in.

Here on the home front, I set a hobo here, one sensor watching the OSA temp, and the other watching the ISA temp. Programmed it for a sample every 30 minutes.

Put the EVENT recorder on the logging gas meter. It too is recording.

Set the programmable thermostat to maintain 68 degrees F, no set back.

    It's nice and cold outside.

    Let the recording begin!!

    controls?

what controls the driveway? Is it on all the time or do the owners turn it on during snow?
  • tekmar...

It has an automatic control. We added some "features" to enhance its operation, like individual twist timers so they can start just certain parts of the system instead of firing the whole thing up just to clear their sidewalks.

There's over 12,000 square feet of melt on this job.

A comment regarding the unusual Insultarp measurments in the first test.

IF the sensor placement was not a problem AND the Insultarp does act as an atypical inslator THEN you should be able to SEE the difference where it matters--melting snow.

    That's why

a temp sensor recorder thingy on the supply & returns of each test area woulda told the whole story.

How many btu's was each area sucking?

Were the flows thru each test area identical?

So many questions for a guy who did this for FREE!.

    You're the bestest, Mark.

Don't you know you can get Grants for this kind of stuff?

Brian, in fireplace infiltration land. See above post.
