also have him replace that main vent, which looks pathetically small.

Requesting opinions on my steam boiler piping installation
Hello everyone-
I need some opinions on the piping installation of my steam boiler. I moved into this house 6 months ago, so this is the first winter I've been using this system. There was banging in a radiator in the master bedroom, so I had Ed Wallace (whom I found through this site - an excellent resource) come out to take a look. He took one look at the boiler and the way its piping is installed and said that it was all wrong, for several reasons. His recommendation was that the piping needs to be ripped out and totally re-done. He suggested I post some pictures here for second opinions. Please take a look and tell me what you think.
The boiler is a Burnham IND5. If Glen Standon is reading this, is it possible for you to email me the piping diagram for this boiler?0 -

Have it re-done. Piping is not right. You are receiving sound advice from Ed.

I'm just a mere homeowner myself,
but I wholeheartedly agree with Ed. At minimum, the header needs to be re-piped because of the material choices and the actual piping, which does not follow any of the diagrams or principles that you can review in "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" or the jobs that are posted with pride here.
You may also benefit from having your vents checked and/or upgraded. Ed is a great resource, I'm sure he'll do right by your system. Please post pictures of the "after" when the time comes.0 -

Ed has given you GREAT advice. The problems seem to be too many to discuss from here(my keyboard). Find a professional to repipe all near boiler piping. If Ed is willing to do the work, pay him the gratitude to finish the job.

Jordan, you can pull the piping diagram right off Burnham's web site. Look for the Independence line of boilers. Its in the installation manual which can be downloaded from this page as a pdf file:
