Nipple Size

I would use nipples that are at least 8-inches, if you have the headroom. You want the vent to open after a steam cycle, so keeping them away from the main helps them cool faster so the radiators don't have to breathe in too much.

Nipple Size
I need to replace the main vents on my single pipe steam system. Do the new vents need nipples? If yes, how long? And why would I need them?
Thanks for your help,

Nipples
The nipple sizes depend on the size of the fitting that you're going in to and the lengths are determined by their locations on the main.

Nipple length formula?
How would I determine nipple length?

More nipple questions...
Steve,
Thanks for the reply. 3 more questions: Is there some formula that determines nipple length? I have only 5 to 6 inches of headroom, can the nipples be slanted? Doesnt the vents on the radiators keep them from breathing in too much?
