CO testing

I just finished his classes on CO testing and combustion analysis today and was that ever worth the money. Now there is one smart dude. The good part for me was that there were only like 7 or 8 people in the class so it was sort of easy to pay attention and have my questions answered. I guess the bad part was that only 8 people in the whole NYC area took the class out of however many tens of thousands of people are in this business. At least I was one of them ;-)

Jim Davis is the reason that I have a business. The only thing that lingers in my mind about him is his pessimistic attitude. By the way, you're already dead of CO poisoning, you just don't know it. What did you think of his advice to seal up the draft hoods on NG appliances and replace them with field control gas barometric? I personally do it all the time, and love the results.

seems logical to me
It seems to me after thinking it through that that's the way they should make them in the first place. I would do it without batting an eye. I always wondered what the real deal was with those stupid hoods anyway. I worked for an oil company for years and always wondered why gas equipment didn't have barometrics also. Now I know...0 -
Whoa!
Jim NEVER tells anyone to block drafthoods or alter equipment UNLESS it is not operating safely.
Careful guys, blanket statements like that fuel the misgivings that some already have for Jim, even though they NEVER attend his classes.
Jim teaches testing and only advocates altering equipment to make it safe.
Glad you both attended his training!

Whoa! ;-)
I understand that part. It's just good to know that there are options out there when needed. I'm glad too...0 -
Excellent!
Hi Phil!
Jim is a great guy and his class changed the way I look at things that burn.
I just didn't want anyone to think that Jim teaches that all equipment should be altered. You and I and everyone that hes ever attended his classes know this, but there are people out there that hate him and they look for any excuse to bad mouth him.
I go to his class any time I can, he is NEVER boring!
Best wishes!
Mark H

When does Jim Davis come west?
I'd like that class; if he ever comes out this way; or even if he doesn't for that matter. How to find out?0 -

I don't know. . . I've found that whether or not the equipment is operating "safely" or not, I've been able to drastically improve the fuel efficiency of most of the appliances I've done the alteration on by being given the simple ability of regulating the draft at the damper. Jim is a great guy. If I can make something work better than the factory can (as delusional and arrogant as that sounds) I'll do it.

I admire
your commitment and I mean no disrespect. You are better trained than most.
What you do in the field is your own call and I am sure that you verify everything that you do with the analyser.
I only pointed out what Jim actually says in class. He does not tell people to alter equipment without reason. You and I both know that "draft hoods" are a joke, but this is a litigious society and there are sharks waiting to swim in for the feeding frenzy.
You and I could go on for hours here on The Wall about industry accepted practices that are dead wrong. Unfortunately, there are many that visit this forum that would not understand what we were talking about.
I am VERY careful about what I will discuss here since much of what we do cannot be explained via a forum. Some have tried to draw me out, but I know where that would end. They come with "what if" and "suppose"......we both know that without hard data from a combustion analyser it is all guessing. If I had a dime for every mistake I made in life because I "guessed" it was the right thing to do I'd be a rich man. Most of us would. After I took Jim's class I stopped guessing. Now I KNOW. So do you.
I'm on your side Keith.

Pessimistic.
Never heard that before. Wouldn't even be teaching if I had any feelings in that direction. Crude, critical, crazy etc. would be closer. Barometrics have two functions. The main reason to apply them is to address equipment safety. The second would be efficiency. Flue draft controls burner air. If draft is not controlled combustion cannot be controlled and maximum efficiency cannot be attained. When equipment shows no signs of poor operation, safety or efficiency issues(mechanical miracles)then I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
You forgot to mention where I was holding my hand on the water heater that had a 400 degree temperature at the colloar below the drafthood.0 -
Unfortunately we had to cancel Sacramento next week. Phoenix is coming up and possibly a Las Vegas could be in the works between Christmas and New Years.0
