analog v digital

I'll look at the White Rodgers 80 series, thanks. So do you think a digital will fix my variable heating cycle rates?

analog v digital
The boiler cycle varies too much for my steam heat, sometimes too long and other times too short. So sometimes I have too much heat, and other times not enough.
Adjusting the anticipator didn't fix the problem, just made the cycle generally longer or shorter, but still variable. Swapping with another analog had similar results.
I've tracked this problem down to the thermostat (T87 "the round") by watching the mercury position. I'm pretty sure it's not the boiler (WM EG40). The t-stat is in a good location (inside wall 2nd floor hallway, no sun or pipes in wall etc).
So, here's my question : I notice digital thermostats claim "precise heating control, within one degree of set temperature". Is this true, or more advertising BS?
Are digitals more precise than analogs generally? If true it seems my problem would be solved.
I've read this great site for hours and have learned much, but haven't seen this specific question. Thanks in advance.0 -
T-stats
I use the White Rodgers1F80-261 stats. They are adjustable and are very accurate.
Hope this helps

check out the smart stats
they should be all digital and will moniter your heat curve and anticipate when to call for heat and when to shut it off. As they moniter the heat curve, they "see" how fast that curve is rising or falling and then turn on or off the boiler before it reaches the top or bottom of the curve, and helps to flatten out the heat curve0 -
I'll check that out, thanks for the info.0 -
Why the 2nd floor hallway
Most heating tstats are on the first floor. Location could be a problem. WW

It's actually closer to the top of the stairs. It was there when I bought the house.
Maybe not the best place, after all. Moving it downstairs may be difficult, as the basement is entirely finished.
Moving it to the master bedroom on the 2nd floor would be a lot easier. Would that help?0 -
The master bedroom
would be better than the hallway. The stairs can be like a chimney where rising warm ait can give a lot of false signals in the heating season. It's not so bad in the cooling season. I like digital stats a lot but I think location is more important in your case. WW
