    cleaver brooks watertube

working on a cleaver brooks water tube boiler .... cant get the pilot to light....running on oil but gas pilot...seems top be excessive air going to pilot.... only one adjustment that i can see and tried several adjustments.....took off lower burner plate that includes the pilot assybley and the 3 nozzels .... havingthat off i can reach up and physically inspect the air adjustment plate ... all seems well .... well here what got me wondering ..... theres a a side access plate about 6" x 12" on the right side that gives access to lower chamber after the blower but before the pilot /burner assy.... if i wedge that open about 1 inch to relieve some of the air pressure ... pilot starts and burner runs fine ..... before i rip the whole front of boiler apart ... anybodygot any ideas

You need Tony Conner and some of the other

Big commercial boiler guys. They'll hook you up. I love those monsters, but am not as well-versed as I would like to be on them yet. Mad Dog

Have you checked the gas pressure to the pilot. I had a problem like this on a PVI water heater. The regulator was bad.

    yes -

sounds like too much air velocity to let the pilot light off. So then you have to ask yourself - what has changed?? The CB's I have tuned have had a VERY fine line between light off and flame failure. I found that measuring the flame signal and adjusting the pilot flame to spec numbers helps - but still needs a watchful eye to gaurantee reliability. Also check pilot gas pressures - CB's seem to like PG pressures on the low side. Other questions - FR or UV/IR? Can you witness a lightoff but not stability? Oil txfrmr ignition? Can you measure chamber pressure? Again - what has changed???

BUT WHEN I WEDGE OPEN THAT SIDE PANEL PILOT LIGHTS GAS AND ROLLS AROUND BUNER 1/2 WAY AROUND LIKE IT SHOULD BE .... 5 DV VOLT SIGNAL ... AND MAIN FLAME FIRES .. .

inspect your air damper --then check all linkage -close the air almost all the way down --then adjust --of course this is after verifying that the solenoid isn't short cycling ,after testing the ignition transformer--and cleaning ,adjusting the electrode MODEL 4's were ok i always hated the staged solenoid system like the CBH boilers --
