Broomel System - DF
Steamhead (in transit)

The cast-iron ham is a float trap which keeps water from running out of the Kriebel vent.
The return elbows are the later version with caps to allow access to the bafflers for cleaning.
If you have to rebuild those valves, and the slotted cups which act as orifices (mounted on the washer bibb screw) are deteriorated or gone, 1/2-inch copper pipe caps work well as replacements. Cut them off to about half their depth and cut two slots in the sides.
We recently restored a Kriebel in the Guilford area of Baltimore. Added Gorton #2 vents to the two long steam mains, rebuilt all the valves, moved a couple rads around and she runs like a top at 6 ounces!
Which reminds me, I have to get some pics of that job.....

Old Steam system
Bill looked at this one in Warrenton, VA last week. It is an old Broomel system with a Kriebel vent. A Burnham V9 powers the system. I am still trying to identify the cast iron ham can hanging above the boiler. It appears to be some kind of boiler return trap. -DF

Why is there a hoffman 75 mounted on the kriebel vent? I thought the kriebel vent had a far larger capacity and was automatic and adjustable.

#75
I don't know why the 75 vent was installed there. You can see that someone punched a hole in the ceiling to allow room for the vent. One of the complaints is that the radiators are very slow to heat so I'd guess that the Ktiebel vent is either not functioning or not adjusted properly. I'll let you know what we find once we tear into this one. -DF
