Coming soon - Direct Vent FVIR Water Heaters

specs on any units yet. I have a couple of requests for information but nothing yet.

  • FVIR

will as of Jan 2006 be required on all Direct Vent Water heaters. I am already having a lot of problems with FVIR standard water heaters with high vent temperatures and poor draft. Just imagine what direct vent will be like.

    Silly...

... sounds like a staffer at the CPSC had another bad hair day. Could they point to any DV water heaters that had blown up due to external combustible gases?

As best as I can tell, the FVIR issue was a great way to return profitability to the gas water heater industry.

Mark my words, boilers are next.

I wish that the kind of money it'll take to make everything idiot-proof from a flammable vapor point of view would be invested in making anti-scald valves necessary instead. My gut feeling would point towards far more people getting scalded and/or killed from stacked hot water than flammable vapors.
  • It is not power vented

just direct vented and I believe it is Jan 1, 2006. Power vented I think is next year (2007).

Any existing stock will be allowed to be depleted before it will be in full effect.

    Ought to be interesting

to see what happens to PVC pipe on the power-vented units!! Bet they have to suck in alot more dilution air to lower the stack temps. Can you say DEPRESSURIZATION???

What are they calling for regarding clearance from combustibles on the direct-vent models Tim?

    What good will that do?

All the combustion air comes from outside and the burner is sealed-thats the whole point and the reason for using direct vent when you can. Do they think all outdoors may at times have explosive properties that we must defend ourselves against?

    I'll see

if I can get some literature.

The atmospheric units are going to cause some trouble and I can't see how the direct vented models will be much better.

I have yet to see any manufacturer warn of high stack temps and approved venting materials for the same.

But at least you now you can kick over all the gas you want around your water heater. Just don't do it in front of your standing pilot boiler!

Happy Thanksgiving Tim and God bless!
