    single pane?

double pane, storm windows? seems you are so close, maybe a little house tightening would put you back in the hot house?

i read your commment about smelling cooking from the day before, not sure if thats a good indication of a tight house or just a good/bad cook? :) what type of insulation?

Yeah, good double-pane windows, the whole bit. There have been a lot of posts saying "insulate, insulate" etc. I assure everyone that we have done everything we can. This is a 1920's brick house and the heat load is quite reasonable for such a house.

But there is NOTHING I can do about the brick walls; for insulation they're not any better than windows.

    brick interior walls?

you say you have brick interior walls? or are they plastered?

you can gain by insulating the basement pipes, not sure if it would be enough, heat lost where you don't want it can be heat loss all the same.

the bond is the joist running on top the basement wall going all around the perimeter of the house, though that house could have a solid 8x8 beam?

    Edit:

I see you have cast iron rads in the 'other' part of the house. if these are against an outside wall with no insulation, you are loosing half your radiation to that cold wall, can you put foam board between the rad and the wall? for a test?

what people have done around here is to glue 1" or more blue board(rigid foam board) to the walls then cover with drywall.
