Where is the excess water coming from??

I would look my return piping make sure it is not plugged with crud or partial plugged causing condensate to run back to the boiler to slow.....then you go down and add water, in the mean time condensate finally makes it causing it to flood.

Where is the excess water coming from??

My system ran fine until the low water shutoff cut off the furnace.I added just enough water to satisfy the low water valve.Every time I add water the system becomes flooded with dirty water a day or two later and spits and hammers on the radiator closest to the end of the main on my one pipe steam system. How can I go from not enough water to too much water. How is that possible. Help please

You might also check your fill valve- might it be leaking by? Also, do you have an automatic feeder?

The only place water can come from is outside the boiler and system. A little crud under the valve seat can let by a lot of water overnight.

The idea of "holdback" where steam and condensate hang out in the piping then comes rushing back later is really only applicable to larger systems. A cubic foot of steam is a cubic inch of water after all.

We also should figure out why your LWCO went into action.

I would take Ron's advice and get the return piping flushed out.

Do you have a steam pro? If you are still on the North Shore there are some good ones... :)
