Main Vents and resetting burner

Thanks, Kevin. It was serviced/cleaned beginning of fall. Not sure what's causing me to have to reset last night and today.
Other question: one more: there's a hole (maybe 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch) in the flew. I had asked a plumbing store once, and they said sometimes the serviceman does that to test when they first install system. Is that right? Do I need to patch? If so, can I do myself. Knowledge is power. I'm going to Dan's seminar in late March. I'm learning a lot about steam. Thanks, again.

    Main Vents and resetting burner

Hello, I have a steam system (one pipe; counterflow). Last year I had a Burham v84 boiler/riello burner put in. I insulated all pipes. Question #1: I have venting only through radiators. Should I consider venting mains? Is that a big deal; is it better to leave well enough alone?
Question #2: last night and this morning, I had to reset burner to get system started. Last time this happened, serviceman reset and said wind got in chimney; as safety feature, it shut down. I'm worried that this happened last night and this morning. Seems okay now (fingers crossed).

    I appreciate your feedback, MaryAnn

    #2 first..

"wind got in the chimney?"...sounds suspect to me...should have no influence on a oil burner reseting....When was the last time it was cleaned and set up properly? It should be done at the start of the heating season....
The main vent are important...the faster the air gets out of the system the sooner you get warm and the boiler can shutoff...these should be added and properly sized...kpc

    FLUE PIPE

HOLE IN FLUE IS FOR OIL SEVICEMAN TO TEST FOR COMBUSTION ANALYSIS. NEEDS TO DUE EVERYTIME THEY SERVICE THE BOILER WHICH SHOULD BE DONE ONCE A YEAR TO OPTOMIZE EFFIENCY OF BOILER. IF STEAM SYSTEM IS A ONE PIPE THEN YES YOU SHOULD HAVE MAIN VENTS. MAIN VENTS ALLOW THE STEAM MAIN TO BECOME FILLED WITH STEAM BEFORE THE RADIATORS TO KEEP THE STEAM SYSTEM IN BALANCE.
