Bleeders on Cast Iron \"Crane Baseboard\" Radiators
They are likely the old style Taco automatic ones, they use a cellulose paper inside that soaks-up water and expands to close, the slotted screw on the side allows the installer to rid the start-up air. You will probably wind up replacing them as I have found after a while they leak and drip down to rot-out the rads connection nipple below. I replace them with a simple wood-wheel type that fits within the end cover.

Dave

Air Bleeder Valves on Crane Cast Iron Baseboard Radiators--HELP
I have a home with 1955 vintage "Crane" cast iron baseboard radiators. We just opened a few of the bleeder valves which I had never seen before to bleed air out of the system. There was no air, only water which was a good thing. The bleeder valves did not have the traditional "hex" head for opening or closing the vent. Instead -- these radiators use a single slotted screw on the side of the bleeder.. A style I had never seen before.
My question is ---- I am having trouble getting these to re-seal and stop water from dripping out. I do not want to over-torque the screw but the dripping does not stop.
Are there some suggestions or "tricks" that have been used to get these style of bleeders to seal?? Rector-seal on the screw or something-- possibly. Any ideas??
Thanks for any help!!!!

Give them a little "love" snug with the screw driver. You should replace them, but not this week with high temps. forcasted to be below 20.0 -
Dave & Laurence --- thank you both very much..
Dave can you explain what a simple wood wheel type of bleeder is and where might I find them? Is there something on the internet that I could reference??
Thanks Alex

Can`t seem to,
recall the manufacturer, but here`s a pic if this helps. The one to the right is the old leaky Taco. I would think you could get these almost anywhere.
