    radiator decorative covers

I just completed a boiler install for a friend. She insists on leaving some decorative covers on a few of her radiators. On some others she has placed shelves with knik-knaks for decoration.
My question is, is this killing the heating efficiency of the system. I tell her it is but dont't have any reference to make a compelling argument.
A normal boiler install for me would be a 50k lbs steam/hr unit. A Laars 125k btu is a little out of my league.
Input on this subject from a residential professional would be much appreciated.

The newsletter is helpful. The particular covers she is using are the worst case according to the diagrams (add 30%). If a cover open in front but solid on top requires 30% more radiation with a 3" gap between radiator and top, it would seem that a cover sitting directly on the radiator (shelves) would be much worse.

Is this restricted heat radiating through the outside wall?
  • Look at the second rad cover article

it has the math figured backwards to show the effect of a cover on the existing radiator. In the case of her covers it would reduce the rad's output 33%.
