Glycol Maintenance

A friend of mine does "Winter Watch" duties around here for people who go South for the winter. He stopped by the other day and was quite rattled; one of his houses was starting to freeze.

We went over and both the nozzle and oil filter were TERRIBLE; last posted service tag was dated 2002. Got it running, but it was too late. Most of the house has frozen and burst. Got the oil company to bring in a crew and start cutting pipes and draining the place in order to save it.

The kicker was that the system had antifreeze installed in 1996 (50/50 mix; 90 gallons total system fluid). The feed valve had been left on. Refractometer read: +32 degrees. When will they learn?
