hot water expansion and pressure?
on what circulator he has and where it is placed on the system. 18psi pretty much assures that the system will work with any residential configuration.

HOT WATER BOILER PRESSURE OR EXPANSION?
MY HOUSE IN JERSEY IN FROM THE 1920'S. I REPLACED THE TIRED OLD HYDROTHERM IN 2002 WITH A CGA4 WEIL. LAST YEAR WHEN THE EXPANSION TANK WENT I REPLACED IT WITH A NEW AMTROL#30 ALONG WITH A NEW FB-38 F/F. EVERYTHING WAS FINE LAST YEAR AFTERWARDS. THE SYSTEM ALSO HAS A SPIROVENT ON THE SUPPLY SIDE, MY HOUSE HAS 6T 25" RADIATORS MIXED WITH 9A C.I. B/B. THIS PAST 2 WEEKS I NOTICED THE TRIDICATOR GOING UP & DOWN, AND NOW THE RELIEF VLV HAS BEEN WORKING AND RECENTLY RELEASED ABOUT A GALLON OF WATER LAST NIGHT. LUCKILY I HAS A BUCKET POSITIONED AFTER I NOTICE LAST NIGHT THE GUAGE WAS AT 27 LBS. THIS MORNING THE GUAGE HAD DROPPED TO 10PSI AND THUS I HAD THE WATER RELEASED. I BELIEVE THIS SHOWS ME THE F/F VLV IS WORKING ALONG WITH RELIEF VLV. iVE ALSO CHECKED THE PSI ON THE EXTROL AND IT HAS REACTED WITH THE BOILER PRESSURE. IVE READ SOME OLD B&G "TIDD"BITS FROM THE 60'S WERE HE TALKS ABOUT THIS. THE HIGHEST RADIATOR IS ABOUT 20' HIGH FROM THE BOILER IN THE BASEMENT. IF THIS IS HOW THE SYSTEM IS GOING TO WORK HOW DO I COMPENSATE FOR THE RELIEF VLV GOING OFF? IN CASE IN MATTERS MY HOUSE WAS PIPED BACK IN THE DAY WITH MONOFLO TEES AND BALANCING VLVS. IVE LIVED HERE FOR 11 YEARS. NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM WITH THE OLD STEEL TANK IN THE CEILING JOIST, I WOULD JUST EMPTY IT EVERY HEATING SEASON. DO I NEED A BIGGER EXTROL? DOES THE SYSTEM HAS AIR TRAPPED SOMEWHERE? HELP! PLEASE0 -
replace the tank
First off, the tank should have been an extrol #60. So your tank you put in was too small for the water volume you have in your large pipes and CI Rads.
Second, your system pressure for 20 feet should be around 18psi.
May the force be with you,

i had a problem with my diaphram tank some thing was sticking in it adjusted the air pressure on the back side made no difference went back to the old style steel tank and everything worked fine0 -
you dont need 18psi at 20 ft. 15 psi is fine and you need to match you tank pressure to your system pressure. they come precharged at about 12 but you need to boost them up to what your system pressure is.
even at 15 psi it still leaves you with about 6 psi at your higest point which is more than enough0 -
Possibly the make up water pressure is too high?? I had a pressure reducing valve go bad and caused the same symptoms. Replaced the valve and everything was o.k.0
