unless no one can check the system weekly. Why? steam systems are hands on, auto feeds will keep a boiler running until the damage is already done. For me the best place for it is where you found it. That said now for your question, the questions that you ask are easy for a pro that understands them, but for you ,what ,where etc. To many things can go wrong for anyone here I think to explain it properly, its that thing about water and electric you know. Check out the find a pro section and play it safe.

auto water feed on steam boiler
There is a autowater feed mechanism that was never installed on the steam boiler that we havein this oldhouse we live in. The mechanism was just laying on the furance when we moved in. My old house had one,so I know how it works and that it is reallly just a safety backup system, but my question is how the heck do I installit. I can't seem to figure out the plumbing aspect of it. There must be some funky fixture that gets sweated into place that allows the buttton on the mechanism to meter the water in. Looks to be an electromagnet that is wired into the furnace to recognize when the water level in the sight glass is low and calls for water. But... what is the pipe/plumbing piece that goes in the middle of this thing??0 -
water feeder
Dan - If it is a McDonnell & Miller 101-A (MM-307(F))electric water feeder, go to this web site and download their instruction sheet.

I installed one myself, but have to admit I am pretty mechanically inclined. It took a while, but has worked beautifully ever since. Very reliable. The thing to remember is that your current valve for adding water to the boiler will remain, and you will install a loop around this valve via the instructions. Make sure you support this new water feeder properly as it does have a bit of weight to be left hanging by itself. Your orignal valve will become a by-pass valve and should remain shut during normal operation. The instructions are pretty clear. Good luck. Mike0
