    Solar Panels

Does anyone have experience with how long it takes to recover the cost associated with augmenting a radiant heat system with solar panels in conjunction with a boiler?
Also, which controls are the most reliable and efficient when using a boiler in conjunction with solar panels?

It depends on a lot of factors...

... location, insolation, orientation, installed cost, etc.

... if you have a PC and a copy of MS Excel, I highly recommend you check out the free retscreen cost/benefit models. They incorporate pretty up-to-date performance for all the stuff you can buy, have irradiation/insolation maps, etc. Nice work, even I'm not a great fan of using Windows-specific VB macros to get the job done.

Installing the panels early in the life of the house (i.e. while it's being built) is usually going to be a lot cheaper than a retrofit later on. Optimizing the panels for winter pickup by installing them "steeper" than the latitude of the installation site is another common thing to do.

Paul, how can you tell? Is it something Dave said, or is it our over-use of prepositional phrases?
