  • Filthy was the main word

we used for this boiler . The decal said Sears , but it was another brand of boiler we see often and the name escapes me . 5 sections of pure hell - sooted up like you can't believe . Wires going every which way . Someone solved a heat bypass problem the hard and expensive way - they added a zone valve to the supply to that zone ( had a circulator already ) . And a relay . And a transformer .
  • Burnham V83

This one was installed by Phil , Tony and myself . Kenny stopped by after his V84 and indirect install . We needed the help . I haven't been this exhausted after an install in years .

    Nice, as always

the Sears was probably made by Dunkirk. Many of their boilers were, Montgomery Ward's too.

  • I think you're right

Very thin sections , round top to each section , legs on just the front and back . The jacket was a little different than the usual Dunkirk . Thanks alot Steamhead .

    nice piece of \"W\"

    Ron,
As one professional to another.."You're a friggin' rock star!" You & the crew deserve some cold, frosty beverages after that. Kudos to you & the crew!

  • Sage advice

I'm heading up to the local tavern to knock back a few . Speaking of which , why is it so hard to find a place that serves Michelob nowadays ? Not Michelob " Light " , and not that " Ultra " , yuck .

Thanks alot Ross , I really appreciate it .

    Oustanding! Ron!

Do the owners even recognize their mechanical room/area/closet after you have done you day of magic?

    Michelob

Not only that, but Michelob doesn't even have the cool looking bottles anymore. Remember, the Mickey's malt liquor "Big Mouth", and the Pabst & Old Style grenades? All the bottles look the same nowadays. Real bummer!

    ART !

It's the only way to describe what you've done pal.

Who did the wiring on that old one...Ray Charles? Chris

I think old Ray could do a better job than that.
  • burnham-riello

that looks like a real nice install, how have the riellos worked for you on the burnhams our supply house only stocks them with beckett and the riello is special order... i got my boss to get us a v84 with a riello and i think it starts smoother and runs quieter in the boiler room then the beckett but the boss is scared to work on riellos... thanks for your time mike...

    Nice, neat install, Ron

    As usual!

Something about clean lines, nothing to excess. Very Zen. :)

Speaking of light beer, my Australian friend, Mike Fitzgerald, always maintained:

    Good beer is filtered.

    Light beer filtered through kidneys.

There. You have been permanently weened. :)

    Beautiful job, Ron. Top shelf.

I don't work with oil very much at all so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but shouldn't there be a barometric on that flue?

The cold ones hit the spot that night , even though I had to settle for Amstel Light . Tahnk you very much buddy .
  • The Riello

is a nice fit with the V8s in my opinion . I kinda think the Beckett with the cover runs a little quieter though . That is , unless we use a Riello F3 in a V83 .

What stack temps are you seeing in the V83 and V84s with the Beckett ? With the Riello we've been seeing mid to high 500 range .

    Thanks alot Mike .
  • A wee bit

before my time . I remember my dad letting me take a sip from his Rheingold grenade bottles when I was a kid . Maybe it was my young age , but that stuff tasted horrible .
  • Your friend

has wisdom beyond his years . Sad thing is light and ultra beer is all the rage . Give me a Michelob or Yuengling and I'll skip the extra slice of pizza the next day . I'll be even , calorie wise , with my light beer friends .

Thanks Brad for the kind words .
  • Uni R

Actually the lady of the home was shocked at how small the new unit is . She was real happy they don't have to bump into the boiler to do laundry anymore .

    Thank you kind sir .
  • My main theory

is wiring can make or break a nice looking install .

Well ...... the piping was atrocious to begin with .

To be honest , I like walking into jobs like this . So much room for improvement .

    Thanks Chris .
  • EBEBRATT

I'm sure Ray could do a better job than this .

Ummm .... who is Ray ?
  • Thanks Al

Any set place for the next get together ?
  • It's a little hidden

We try to point it away from the living area if possible . Not sure if that cuts down on the sound , but it's worth a shot .

    Thanks John .

    Ron Jr.

Wow. I really like to look at your jobs. It gives me a template for what a boiler room can look like. How long did this job take? I will post one of mine this week and The Wall can let me know what you think. Take care, Aaron

    No Fair

Looks like you had plenty of room AND you got to stand up also. You Baby .... :)

Ron, where are the return ball valves ? Up high ?

I think the small things like pointing the barometric away are what seperates you from the crowd.

    Nice Work Pal.

    Ray

Charles. Substitute Stevie Wonder, Helen Keller, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Jose' Feliciano.... you get the idea.

Truth be told though, the blind folks I know take incredible care with what they do, from weaving to pottery to piano tuning. You could not tell it from work done by a sighted person. Seriously.

Anyway, joke made, hopefully not at anyone's expense.

    Nice work lad.

I'll bet the old "racoon eyes" were the look de jour once the old iron hit the curb? I fondly recall the wash up ritual with waterless hand cleaner, usually Goop, then the sandy stuff Sid's used to sell in the shaker can, followed by the stiff bristle brush and laundry detergent, followed an hour later with half a pound of Vasoline "treatment."

Jaye used to ask, "How can you get so dirty"? I replied, "It's the color of money hon."

    Nice job.
  • temp

Ron, the v83 with beckett runs close to 600 gross if i remeber, when we checked the draft i remember the hose starting to get soft on tester and saying to myself boiler is a little to short to absorb more heat before it hits chimney..we tend to lean towards the v84...i guess we have to start using the mpo to get higher eff ratings, thanks mike...
  • Aaron

This one was a one dayer . We ran into a bit of OT , but that was more to do with the tight turns and the cold ( and it was COLD ) . The customer bought us a pizza that we had to eat in 5 minutes or it woulda froze .

Please post some pics as soon as you can . I always enjoy seeing how other people pipe their boilers . Thanks alot Aaron .
  • Well ........

There was a wall close to the left and 2 feet from the front of the boiler . We were kinda trippin' over each other for a while . Give me a wide open basement and a binky anytime :)

We tied in all the returns at ceiling height . Isolation valves for each supply and return . We used to throw a purge on each zone but we decided it's overkill . Most of our systems aren't drained for decades .

    Thanks alot Scott .
  • Hey Ken ol' pal

The 2 mopes I was with didn't tell me I was 8 shades darker than when we started .

What do you call that wash-up ritual ? The 4 step program ? Was the Vasoline for the dry skin or was it for cleaning too ?

I didn't take the time to wash my hands at all , even for the pizza . When I got home I studied my hands and arms ..... I have a bottle of Hercules and some Goop at home and thought that'll work but it'll take precious beer time out of the schedule . So..... 5 minutes , some dish soap and 3 Brillo pads later I was almost semi-clean .

Thanks alot Ken , it's great to hear from you .

    service install

Another really nice job Ron! I look at your work from service perspective. If I was called there now I see the 4 nice easy to get to isolated pumps fed from one easy to get to 4 inch box fed from the easy to get to pump relay box were the stat wires go and if the expansion tank needs changing, it's right there. And, I probably shouldn't admit this but when one of my cheap co workers asks how to install a boiler I open my file cabinate, give him one of your "after" pictures and say "make it look just exactly like this" Thanks again for sharing your groups work.
