If buying a new system, I would want something closer to 90% efficiency.

    Need Propane Boiler Recommendations

My Mom's propane fired boiler needs to be replaced. After 35+ years of service.

House is 1600 sq ft cape, mid Long Island location.

Hydronic baseboard, 2 zones. HW is from seperate propane heater.

Any types &/or brands to recommend?

Well, perhaps some of the luminaries here can help.

...but my first inclination considering the fuel choice is a very efficient CI boiler or better yet a mod/con boiler. To see which is appropriate, I'd do a heat loss to figure out what is actually needed, then determine how hot the emitters have to run on a design day. With any luck, a mod/con boiler will not only work (i.e. enjoy low return water temperatures) but won't cost an arm and a leg extra either.

As for the actual boiler, there are wide range of boilers out there. Unless you're the one who will maintain and install the thing, I'd locate a quality installer and then see what brands he/she is familiar with. Then whittle your boiler choices down from that selection. IMO, the Vitodens is still the most robust mod/con boiler out there, but it definitely comes with a premium price tag.

    lp boiler

I would go with Burnham Series 2 boiler. 80% efficient without a power ventor. Just a vent damper and electronic ignition. A very trustworthy boiler.

At the price Lp is going to be....

I go nothing less than a 90+ mod/con boiler like the WM Ultra.
You get all that and outdoor reset to boot, built right in.
For the amount of space you got there the 80,000 would be more than enough, unless the windows are open:-)
With the 80 though, you need to order the 80LP, as they are not feild convertable.

    Lochinvar Knight Boiler

Check out the Lochinvar Knight series boiler. This is a 93% AFUE hot water boiler that comes standard with a propane conversion kit as shipped from the factory--very easy to convert. Outdoor reset is standard and the efficiency goes up if you can reduce the return temperature. For example, the 93% AFUE is at 140F return. If you lower the return water temperature to, say, 100F, efficiency goes up to 97% to 98%.

Sizes are 80,000 to 500,000 input BTU/HR, with 5:1 turndown and full modulation from 20% to 100% firing.
