My Bathroom renovation w/radiant (s. milne )

one cozy shower , Scott . Are you doing the tile work yourself ?

I'm redoing my bathroom , gonna try 1/4 inch copper for floor radiant ( very small bathroom , might be a very dumb idea too ! If it don't work , well , tile is cheap ) . The shower will be against an outside wall . I want to try the radiant track like you used , in the wall for supplemental while in the shower . But ... I want to use the potable hot water for the wall loop . You think I'd be running the risk of bacteria growing in the pex ? It would add maybe 40 feet of run to the hot pipe , less than 50 feet total to the indirect heater . I've seen runs much longer in some homes to get to the last shower . I also wonder if the trac will heat fast enough to make a difference .

    Climate panel on the floor

went under the cast iron Kohler Memoirs tub. Up the back wall and then back across the cieling. I ran out of Climate Panel on the Sat. I was doing it so I used Quick Trac. Its nice that these two products are inter-changeable.

I checked there don't seem to be any squeaks in the floor. By going across the cieling I exceeded the sq footage alittle but that will be the return and I have enough on the floor and wall.

I got the idea for the wall from ME's jobs.

I am thinking that the wall being warm should lower the hot water I use to keep warm during January and Febuary.

    For the plumbers

and I know for some thats a dirty word !

I installed Jado shower mixing valve with volume controls for the hand shower and shower head. They can both be operated individually. I did'nt have room for body sprays so the hadn shower can run at the same time as the shower head.

The tub has sepereate tub fillers for a fast fill ( besides I like the look ). The room behind the wet wall is a bedroom so I insulated the wall and ( did'nt take a picture ) I insulated the pipes to reduce the flow noise.

I brought up 3/4 copper from the basement and installed a re-circ line.

Soil piping for the WC is cast iron and the tun and lav are PVC.

Ask away and am open to advice.

    hand shower

I wash my hands in the same water I use on the rest of me:)

If your hand shower is the pipe in the corner, you might want to check if you will be able to get it installed after the tile is in. Figure 1" or so for the backer and tile. if there is an elbow you might not be able to swing it.

Human Microwave Oven. You WILL discover the meaning of mean radiant temperature.

I'd bet you can (and will) market it!

    Good job!

    Yup...

... no need for towels in that bathroom, just stand in the middle with the hands outstretched and let the walls, floor, and ceiling do the rest...

Nice job, Scott! I hope that it'll be as comfortable as it looks.

    *~/:)

You are probably the best friend i never laid eyes on :) Whats the flow rate in the valve?15 gallons a min? got plenty storage and an additional plate exchanger for it? maybe all the floor ceiling and wall heat will make it all good :) and i was sniveling over a simple roman tub spout and wand ..sheesh :)

    Weezy

Ya know I hav'nt checked the flow rate in the valve itself but the head and hand shower are 2.5 each "per code". So 5gpm when thier both on. I have a 50 gallon Buderus indirect which has'nt let me down yet. I suspect I'll be installing a tempering valvc eand cranking it up to 150 and ways, ala Yates.

Mark, I am SURE this will not be the last time I do this.

    Think Hard about it

    1) Your adding fifty feet of delay when you turn on the shower.

    2) Think radiant Mass, you'll have to run it awhile to heat up the wall.

    3) 1/4" tubing will severly lower the flow rate of the hot water. Not good after a long day in a cold house replace a boiler in Febuary.

I would go hydronic radiant the whole way. Ron ... YOU deserve it :)

    So Mark

how do you think the tub will be effected ? To large a Mass, or hold the heat longer ?

    That is...

one awsome looking job! Are those air chambers on the shower piping? Take all the pics you can. This looks like a very old home that used to be wood lath/plaster. Makes me wonder what your doing to the rest of it.

The 100yo house I did got me an album with about 300 or so pictures. My wife and I really enjoy looking through them.

I'm sure the photos will be viewed fondly LATER, but right now...not so much. Lookin good. Chris

    talking head

my head got re-attached last night after we got the news the cement borad will be finished tonight and the wall board gets installed and plaster friday and saturday. This was supposed to be a "fast trac" job but we all know how that goes :)

Scott, the house is a little over 100 years old and built like the brick house. The carpenters tried to tell me the wall looked off because the original wall was off.... I THINK NOT. I had them fix thier wall. This place is square and solid.

  • Very good points

I thought the pex tube looked a little bigger than 1/4 inch ? The floor copper in my bathroom would be connected to a separate zone . You're right - I will just connect the wall radiant in with the floor .

Please keep us updated with pics - I only steal ideas from the best .
