Searching for a Steam System Specialist in South Jersey

Our house is heated by an old 2-pipe steam system. We have done some research on how these systems are supposed to work and know that even though ours has been providing heat to our home, it has not been working properly. This year it doesn't seem to be working at all. We are looking for a professional who knows his way around a steam system and can troubleshoot the entire system from top to bottom. We live in Camden County in South Jersey. We have had our fair share of "knuckleheads" (to quote Dan Holohan) tinker with our system, and we're sure they've made it worse. We need a true expert. Any recommendations/suggestions? Thanks.

perhaps, but i do mostly commercial/industrial and dont want to get heavy into residential at this time, but if there is a customer who is truly in need and there is not someone else here to service them properly, i will work with them.

    We get a lot more

than residential customers on this site. Some very large jobs have come from Find a Pro ads. Oh, and it helps support this site. Everyone wins. ;-) Thanks for considering it.

Alternative method to finding the experts

An alternative to finding a contractor who knows his business with steam systems (or hot water boilers) is to contact a well known mechanical engineering firm. They will be familiar with commercial contractors and residential types that prolly work on older systems or that modify the older systems to newer standards. Its only gonna cost you a bit of time ot make some phone calls. Best of luck to you.

    Still Without Heat

I wanted to say thanks to those who responded to our original posting - I will be following up with their suggestions. Sorry for the delay, but our computer has been on the fritz as well as our heating system.

In the meantime, we were connected to a residential heating guy (through another heating company that couldn't help us). He seemed to know his way around a steam system and confirmed for us what we already thought - the vent trap is not working, so the system is backing up with air and water, which means there is no room for the steam that is being generated in the boiler to move up and into the radiators. He went away without charging us and told us he would look to see if there was a replacement part that could be fitted into our old system. Despite repeated calls to the guy, we haven't heard from him since.

    So...this is what we have:

Bryant Heater Company Tubular Gas Boiler
    Boiler No. 3-443
    Serial No. 309801
    Steam Rating 660
    Hourly BTU Input 198000
    Water Rating 1060
    Patents ranging from 1921-1936
    Max W.P. Steam 15lbs. Water 50lbs.

    and a

    Webster Modulation Vent Trap

Is there any hope of finding a modern vent trap that can be retrofitted into this system?

    Thanks.

    Steam guy

There's a guy in Merchantville named Bill Alber that could likely help. He's a mechanical engineer with his own HVAC business called Alber Service. Actually he inherited the business from his father but whatever-he knows steam systems. 856-317-1750 I used to work for him. He's a good guy.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Yep. I know your halfway between Steamhead and Me

Folks. Both of us travel on consulting for these systems. Either of us can tell you what's right, what's wrong and HOW!!!! to fix it. Then, all you have to do is find an honest local plumber to make the corrections. We do a lot of these. Here if you need us. Mad Dog

We would like to thank John Sibley for giving us Bill Alber's name. We contacted Alber Service, and they have successfully diagnosed and repaired our problem. We are so grateful to have heat again!

So, thank you, John Sibley. Thank you, Alber Service. And thank you, HeatingHelp.com for giving us a forum where we could get the help we needed.
