I have a home built in the 50's. We have a fireplace which I feel is not very usefull for heating. What is the most efficient way to use that space for heating but not spend outrageous $$$$?
I've heard about installing some type of heating system inside the fireplace.

Something tells me your replys will have the words 'hot water' or 'steam' in it here.
A good friend installed a firebox insert that sticks out onto the hearth and radiates very well. Pretty cheap as well. Burns pellets or small wood. By hanging out, the heat radiates into the room, not just up the chimney.
