Would anyone have any piping diagrams for using a tankless coil and storage tank or electric water heater ?
Its for a friend who is hoping to put on an addition in 2-3 years with a new boiler and indirect then.

short cycle

That diagram shows the hot water from the coil going into the bottom of the storage tank. Very close to the thermostat. Wouldn't that "confuse" the thermostat into shutting off the circulator prematurely and then a moment later it will kick on again - short cycling kinda?
I plumbed my setup with the circulator TAKING the water from the bottom of the tank and then after the boiler coil, pumping into the cold supply of the storage tank.
BTW, how do these tanks from john wood water heaters compare in price to a regular electric w/h that you use in the same way?

Very good point
We use another brand and we pipe it like you did - pumping from the bottom of the tank to the coil . I'm not sure if it makes a big difference though - the diptube of the cold inlet goes almost to the bottom of the tank also , so you wind up getting a blast of hot water near the surface mount aquastat either way .
We haven't used John Wood yet . I would guess a little cheaper if it only has one aquastat , compared to the 2 we see on the tanks we use now .0 -
dip tube
I considered cutting the dip tube on my tank, but since GE (really Rheem) claims that the curved tube promotes swirling to reduce sedimant buildup I left it in.
