Honeywell Honeywell R8184G (cut in / cut out) ??

Hi all -

I'm having some issues with my boiler shutting off before the temp actually trips the thermostate. The shut in / shut off isn't working properly. Right now the the vertical screw is set to 0.5psi and the white dial is set to 1psi.

My understanding is that this is correct, however apparently not! :) Any other reasons why this would shut off (other than it being bad)? I have two #1 Gortons in the end of my main, but the pressure builds up after running for 20-30 minutes and then it kicks off. If I go down and turn the screw so the metal bar goes above 0.1 (on the left side of the control) it kicks back on, but I don't want to run this at a high pressure because I know it uses more fuel.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm a little scared that the boiler is just going to shut off when I'm not here and thus not heat properly, etc. Thanks! I can post a picture too if that will help.

cheers
John

    Still not working...

The pigtail doesn't appear to be plugged. I'm really confused about why there is so much pressure building up in the system after it's been running for 15-20 minutes, why doesn't it just shut off after 5 minutes. Very bizarre. If anyone has any other ideas I would greatly appreciate it, this is really driving me crazy!! I'm considering just buying a new Honeywell control to exclude that as the issue.

Thanks so much everyone, this site has helped me out SO much...

    Cheers

    Turning off on pressure

I'm not sure I understand what's going on. It's normal for the boiler to shut off before the thermostat is satisfied if it's shutting off on the pressuretrol. That means that (given your settings) you've hit around 1.5 psi in the system, which is fine, and so the boiler doesn't need to make more steam just yet. It'll shut off until the steam pressure drops, but you aren't "losing" heating time since the rads will still be full of steam during this time. If you wait around, the boiler will turn back on when enough steam condenses to drop the pressure back to 0.5 psi.

Now, if it's shutting off before the rads get fully hot and it's not from the thermostat, then you have issues.

    Thanks...

Maybe I'm just being impatient... I'll see if the boiler does indeed come back on after the steam condenses, just seems weird that it was shutting off before the thermostat was satisfied... Sorry for what may seem like a silly questions, I'm still learning this system. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. :)

    cheers

    8184G

8184G is a primary control, it has nothing to do with pressure settings, perhaps you meant PA404A or something like that?

Are the air vents ok? do you have end of main vents? Blocked vents could short cycle on pressure.
