According to what Ive read... pump AWAY from the Expansion Tank..And Instal. manuals showing the Circulators pumping INTO the boiler...

Going on "A picture is worth a thousand words..." and also examples of Installation methods.... The attached HTP Munchkin/Superstor tank pdf shows the circulators pumping away from the Exp.tank AND boiler...

Is it THAT CRITICAL in the placement of circulators ? ... given the proper placement of zone checkvalves

Youy're going to do the piping following a picture in a brochure?

It also doesn't show the primary loop, and it doesn't show any radiators...this does not mean you can leave out the radiation.

Piping

Just follow the piping diagram for your application in the installation manual. You will have no problems.

As far as the pumping goes. The circulators for your heat zones are pumping away from the expansion tank. The one for the boiler must pump into the boiler. You are separating them hydroniclly with the pri/sec piping.

Ok... ok... I guess I lost some points on that 'less than brilliant' question regarding 'pictures'. I guess now we now know who ISNT a professional.

My reference to such PICTURES is purely used as a representation of what an installation is SUPPOSED to look like.. AFTER a heating system is professionally designed/spec'd out... but given my eye for details in this case... I wasnt seeing a circulator pumping into the Boiler.

In ANY case...I know that the boiler manufacture's Piping instructions ARE what's to be followed .

forget the picture

Lot's of people get confused on this. They assume flow direction in a primary/secondary piping setup matters.

It is classic to put the air eliminator/x-tank downstream of the boiler return so it sees the hottest water. So where is the POPNC (point of no pressure change?) It's at the x-tank! It's also anywhere near the x-tank where there is little to no flow induced pressure change. If you look at the diagram, there is nothing that will cause major drag, so the pressures is also not changing at the closely spaced tees for the P/S. This is true on either side of the x-tank.

So the diagram that HTP provides is pumping away from the POPNC, even though it looks like it's pumping toward the x-tank by the water flow. Cool, huh?
