Boiler Usage Savings

Is there a way of calculating the gas usage savings if I were to replace our current 350,000 btu boiler with a properly sized 175,000 btu unit? We used a total of 1,996.7 therms to heat an 80 year old brick home last winter in northern Indiana. I'm trying to get an idea of the potential payback. With an expected gas increase of 43% this heating season, I'm wondering if replacing the boiler would be a valid consideration. The current boiler was replaced in 2000 and since we bought the home, I have added a vapor stat, and done everything that has been recommended by this site and our heating tech to bring the system up to required working order. Thanks for your input!

Cannot answer your question, but we will be replacing our oversized steam boiler soon and I hope to report some savings. The difference is that mine is a circa 1975 W-M; hopefully the new Burnham will be a little more efficient. I realize there is a limit as to efficiencies with steam. Our drop will be from 450,000 to 250,000. One question/observation: if your present boiler is only 5 years old, is there any reason to replace it other than the fact that it is oversized? Just curious.

1 therm is equal to approx. 100,000 btus. It will vary in differant regions. Check with your utility co.
Down sizing the boiler, by almost 50%. Will certainly improve the system operation. 50% downsize is unusal, I'd double check, don't want to come up short

Bob, Just looking to see what I may be able to save if it was properly sized. Plus my system is a Mouat Vapor and it would improve the operation of the system.
    Thanks for your response.
