Mod/Con

Options
The Viessmann is my first choice, you can not beat the quality if this boiler it is in a league all its own. My second choice is the Lochinvar Knight we have sold several of these boilers, commercial and residential with no problems at all.
I have yet to try a mod/con boiler with an aluminum heat exchanger, but the Buderus seems to be a nice boiler, many here on the wall have had great success with them.
I recently had training on the Biasi boiler line and they offere a wall hung boiler that will modulate but will not condense so this boiler would be a great option for any type of high temp load.

This should be a long thread.... :)

My personal favorite is the Viessmann Vitodens. Those of us familiar with it know it is in a class by itself. Fit, finish, engineering, material, weight of material (heft the heat exchanger compared to a competitor and you will know). Controls, adaptive intelligence, internal variable-speed circulator, adaptive modulation...

My second choices would be the Buderus GB-142 or the Triangle Tube Prestige, not to the exclusion of others. Each has a price point and all have the same goal: to heat a structure as efficiently as they can. It is the how and how well built that separate the good from the great.

There are many out there. Each has it's proponents and detractors. If you are the installer, then YOU become a key component. Anyone can mess up a great boiler with a poorly thought out installation. A good installer can make an excellent system out of a mediocre Mod-Con.

    Mod Cons

The Viessmann Vitodens is the best out there. When the budget is more important , I like the Triangle Tube Prestige because of the water content. I wish there were smaller versions of both.

Hot Rod wrote an article comparing the Mascot, Ultra, Prestige, Vitodens, and Knight in the October issue of Plumbing Engineer.

My take and links for a few:

    1. Viessmann Vitodens 200
The Vitodens is full of features and the construction is very high quality. The burner is unlike any of the rest. The heat exchanger is heavy stainless steel. It has a 4:1 turndown.

    2. Triangle Tube Prestige
The Prestige has a stainless steel heat exchanger with some water content. Head loss through the heat exchanger is very low. it has a 3.7 to 1 turndown.

    3. Lochinvar Knight
I have heard nothing bad about the Knight. There is a 500MBH version available.

    4. Baxi Luna HT

    5. Laars Mascot

    6. Weil McLain Ultra

    7. Burnham Freedom CM
I like the concentric vent. Looks to be well thought out.

    8. Dunkirk Q95
The ECR boilers are cast in the USA. The 200 is the only mod/con size they offer. They also have con's that don't mod.

    9. Crown Bimini
    The Bimini is only available in a couple sizes. A 150MBH (5:1) and a 225MBH (4:1).

    10. Munchkin Contender
I am a little wary of the number of plastic parts, but there is a 50MBH unit, which is the smallest of any I know of available in the US currently. Turndown varies with size.

    11. NY Thermal Trinity

    12. Buderus GB142

I install a lot of the Prestige. Love the higher water content and SS heat exchanger. Fit and finish could be better but it is a very nice boiler from a mechanic's point of view.

My second choice would be the Knight. Although, the footprint is a bit large.

I personally stick to only SS heat exchangers b/c of the potential problems with AL. Just my personal choice. To me it has a lot to do with your local rep and product support. There are a lot of quality products out there to choose from.
