Electronic thermostats/programmable - what is the typical pause between cycles per hour...Depends on make and model, steam or gas and some short cycling rooms, small individual zoned rooms with high heat loss will cycle a ridculous number of times, the t stat depending upon setting will/ can limit this. This should be your question, not typical pause.

What are the tell tale signs of a plugged pigtail on a one pipe steam system...depends upon what the pigtale is serving??? from short cycling, to won't work at all to can't read the gauge, to how the pigtale is orented.

Hoe do you know if you have to increase the pipe size of a section of steam main line...By following the boiler manufacturers recommondations of the near piping and the length of the horizontal distribution sizing charts, etc you usually avoid having to ask this question, banging is the classic sign that a number of things are wrong. Including btu radiation capacity, varies with pipe size as well and insulation issues.
