5 pounds is excessive. I would set your main at 1 1/2 and subtractive differential at 0 or .5 and see how the system responds. When a call for heat occurs out of setback ,time the first cycle and if you get multiple short cycles at the end to satisfy the stat let us know the # of cycles.

PRESSURETROL SETTINGS
Had a new Burnham V84 oil boiler installed as replacement in a single 2" main steam line house. Had problems with excessive "short cycling" and final attempt to correct was to replace the initial Pressuretrol with a Honeywell L404F unit. Service person set the Differential to 5psi and the Main to 5psi . Short cycling appears to have been reduced.
Question is whether the settings are too high; I thought that settings should be 2.5 and 0. for sgl family house.
Any risk or potential problems with higher settings? Thx for any help/advice.0 -
pressuretrol settings
I remember someone on this page saying that the Empire State building is heated by steam at 5 psi. It sounds like your tech just cranked up the pressure and did not solve the real problem. Click on "steam problems" at the top of this page. It could be a number to things --radiator venting, line venting, or plugged pigtail, etc.
.5 cut-in 1.5 cutout is the standard pressuretrol setting, anything more wastes fuel. At 15lbs psi the presuure relief valve will blow according to the tag on my boiler.

The product specialist at Honeywell says L404 is a commercial control and also mentioned the Empire State Building for the 5psi.
He says that the typical home uses a PA404, usually set them in the 1-2psi range and set the differential as small as possible (1-5psi diff most models).0
