Steam bolier dirty water

Just moved into a house with a steam boiler.
Last nite the boiler shut down due to low water level. I added more, but now the water visible in the glass sight is yellow/brown instead of clear as before. Also, the water level is bouncing up and down - any ideas?
Thanks

You diagnosed the problem, Jim. The boiler probably could use a good skimming and treatment to clean up the water. A good steam pro can do this for you at reasonable cost.0
