Ode to a Dead Man....

I (and all here) for one try to create "brilliant" installs but these men were brilliant. In the Middle of great book on The Krupp Familiy (The Cannon Kings)of Essen, Germany. Some strokes of Brilliance and ALOT of trial and error over 400 years experimenting. We owe all these deadmen for their perseverance. Mad Dog

Ode to a Dean Man....
I knew everyone here would appreciate this.
There are dead men out there that did some amazing things. Invented devices we still use to this day and so taken for granted that it doesn't occur to anyone that it was once a revolutionary idea.
This dead man invented a device so common that most of the population of the U.S. and the developed world live within a few hundred feet of one. Birdsill Holly - father of the fire hydrant. Not only that - he invented district steam heating (a topic near and dear to many on this board), the idea of a shared fire/public water supply, the steam meter and a variety of other pumps and water power related items.
Aside from his inventions, a few crumbling factory buildings including the very first district heating power plant remain in his home base of Lockport, NY as a reminder. This link has some more on this little known genious:

He has always
been one of my favorites. Thanks for the link, and for remembering him.Retired and loving it.0 -
Interesting
In my city there is a pumped fire system that services hydrants and commercial building fire systems. Known as the Holly system
Never knew the history. Thanks for the heads up!
Jim

Woes in the home of Birdsill Holly
Any steam/radiant pros in the Lockport NY (Buffalo) area? Old house, two pipe steam, new kitchen with hopes for radiant.0 -
Let me guess....
your kitchen designer wants to tear out the radiators, right?
I'd find another designer.
Have you tried the Find a Professional page of this site? I bet you have a Vapor system.....

radiant loop
how about fabricating a radiant loop with the condensate & a mixing valve,Frank ?0 -
Given the nature of condensate
I wouldn't want it in the loop. I would use a heat exchanger, but that adds more complication. BUT- has anyone done a heat-loss to see if there is enough floor area for radiant to work? If there is not, where do you put the second heat source? Leaving the radiators in place is so simple, but it sails over a lot of designers' heads. They don't have to actually use those underheated kitchens....
