geothermal heating & cooling
I have a house (brownstone) in Brooklyn , NY 11211 & I wonder if would be possible/feasible to drill holes I front of the house for geothermal pipes. Do you know anybody in NYC area who is doing well drilling installations?0 -
urban geothermal
OK, there's at least two of us out here who are
curious about geothermal in dense urban settings.
Is it just plain nuts to think the city will let
you drill your own well?0 -
crazy
I know for a fact, it is being done in NYC, mostly commercial. Of course you need to find locations of all the underground piping, wiring, telephone, communications and gas, for this you'll need an enginnering consultant and permits, bonded to repair sidewalks etc.
I know one well guy from Putnam County going down there, may help.
Stick with a nice high eff gas boiler, try to tighten up that brownstone with windows, insulation etcc..

go geo
I agree, to spend the money and the mental energy dealing with a drill rig poking holes in an urban envirnment, have you buttoned up you home to its maximum capability?

we've done a few in city areas, The well holes have to be 10' apart. the smallest area we had to work w/ was a drive way. roughly 8'x 30', I still drive by that place and shake my head. I think you should start by contacting the place that issues the well drilling permits. they should be able to tell you who has done that type of work in your area. a hydronic GEO system is the best of both worlds.

unique but not cost effective
There are a lot more geothermal jobs in NYC than you might realize, but they are all large jobs.
Do a google search for 1400 fifth ave for Carlton Brown's most famous NYC geothermal project.
Do a google search for Full Spectrum of NY for Carlton Brown's development company which is doing very interesting and Green urban housing.
I know of 2 or 3 very interesting projects being done in 2007 by Colin Cathcart, of Kiss & Cathcart who has also done some world famous work with photovoltaics.
Most people feel it is not cost effective to do geo in NYC where you have to do the piping vertical on small projects.
However, you certainly could do a geothermal system.
You can do an open system with wells or a closed system with just piping, but it is very expensive in NYC.
Geo is much cheaper with horizontal piping runs buried 3 or 4 feet underground, but this is not possible here in NYC, where land is at such a premium.
I'm doing a horizontal geo in PA this coming summer at a house I own there. I'm draining my pond and putting the piping under the pond.
Good Luck,
Respectfully,
