Old system up and running again

A special thanks to Kevin Coppinger for the lead on a steam system that wasn't working in Dover NH. Seems Keving took a look at it, and unlike the other "guessers" who worked on it, felt it was beyond his experience to attempt any repairs, and sent us the lead. It takes a good man to admit to knowing his limitations, and a pat on the back for that call, Kevin.
Seem this older home's previous owner had a new steamer put in just before he sold the place. The current owner had experienced virtually no heat last winter. We looked a the system, found a two-pipe system, a ton of traps, a small condensate pump at the rear of the house, 30's vintage zone valves (3- 2" Honeywells) and......a removed and plugged receiver at the boiler. The oil company that installed the boiler ( nameless to protect the guilty), in their uninformed wisdom, removed the receiver and piped the returns directly to a new Hartford loop at the rear of the new Peerless 5 section steamer. There was a two wire programable stat trying to run the three wire zone valves, and the stem was broken on two of the valves.
So, we removed the zone valves as they were not necessary to control the system in its present form and wired the stat directly to the boiler control, installed a new receiver/feed tank, rebuilt two steam F&T's (old Hoffmans) and voila......heat everywhere in the house, and comfortable too !!!!
Imagine that !!! Good call Kevin. Even thought its a long ride from Portland, it was a pleasure to fix this one.

Al...I am glad...
it worked out for you and the customer. It was a shame that such a nice system (and house) saw so much neglect and improper installation practices...I knew I was over my head so I took the advice on Dan by not saying I had all the answers but instead said I will find out..or in this case found someone who did... you and yor guy did some very nice work there...thanks. kpc
