Radiant thermostat w/ floor sensor

Not sure I can agree with you there Big Ed. In moderate weather an 85F floor could easily result in excessive air temperature.

My view of floor temp sensors is that they're best used to establish limits.

For instance in a bathroom you may well want to set a minimum floor temp regardless of air temp.

With hardwood or in areas where the floor alone may not be able to handle the load you would want a maximum limit.

    radiant - thermostat/ controls

Just added two zones of radiant to our home 1/ wood floors 1/ tile floor. I was under the impression a thermostat w/ floor sensor was the way to go, but depending on which crew shows up I get different answers.
Any preference on brands, do the sensors ever need to be replaced?

    Floor Sensor

Since keeping a radiant slab is best kept at 85*, a floor sensor is the way to go..Anything can break so install it so it can be removed and serviced if need be. In bed a sensor tube in the floor so the sensor could slide out if needed..

are available with both air and slab sensing versions. They are alspo sold under the Uponor name.

I would put the floor sensor in a sleeve for easy removal and replacement. I use a piece if pex with a plugged copper stub at the end for a sensor well.
