I could not agree with you more. TRV's are the way to control a heating system with constant circulation. Outdoor reset, indoor reset, no wires, no psychology wrt the number the thermostat says. Only complaint: The available Cv's are too low to be used for controlling larger zones.

KISS rocks........
Lately, I have found that people are overwelled, I think even us high tech guys, with technology. People are moving are the speed light and they barely have time to keep their lives together let alone take the time to read the owners manual to operate their Tstats. They simply want to go up to the tstat and turn it up of down.
Now with radiant floor heating systems that is what we as contractors do not want...you know the guy who wakes up in the morning, has a pot of coffee and look out. He is wired and can't help himself from touching the tstat...he just can't help himself. One thing he does understand is the temp reading on the stat and therefor he is comfortable adjusting the tstat.
Where am I going with this well to help solve the high tech control problem and keep the touchy feely guy away from our controls. I have found the TRV style wall mount controls , I call them comfort dials to be a perfect fit they are SIMPLE yet very effective. THey do not state the room temp they have weird numbers like 1..2..3..4..5. THey do not tell the room temp wow but I am comfortable so why should I touch the dial. When guest some they do not understand the comfort dial so therefore they do not touch the dial, but they are indeed comfortable or maybe they are cold and they decided to try and adjust the dial away from the snowflake and when they come back they are warm.
No manual necessary... just have to know the snowflake is cold.
In this day in age I like trying to simplify my life and these comfort dials are helping.

I still don't understand what this has to do with Gene Simmons.0 -
CV to GPM conversion?
Andrew
So far I have not had any troubles with big zones but I do remember talking to Oventrop about the CV rating of the valves. Off hand do you know the rating,GPM, of the 3/4' valves. I thought it was around 3.5 gpm. Which is fairly large. At that point I think you could look at additional zoning to cover the lower flow valves. Like you said when you are using them with a constant circ boiler you have the ultimate controls-Modulating gas valve, OD and ID reset and modulating flow. Quite an elegant system for not using electronic room controls.

Had a customer
a few years ago that we installed a panel rad system for.
Called me one day to say that his living room was too cool.
I asked him waht he has the TRV dial set to and he said "2". I told him to turn it to "3".
"How warm is 3?" he asked.
"One more than 2." said I.
A nice thermostat idea.........customer turns it up and the "room reading" slowly climbs to that setting. Not connected to anything.
Or how about this one. A thermostat that tells the customer how much money in fuel they are going to spend at each setting. I bet a WHOLE BUNCH of folks would start finding 55 quite comfy!! HAHAHHAHA!
I agree with you Jeff.

Gene Simmons
will come to your house to turn the t-stat up or down.
Then he'll spit blood all over your couch and smash his bass on the kitchen counter.
Hide your daughters.

My understanding is that the head loss is closer to 3.5 ft at approx 0.5 gpm in the middle of the range, but that may be for a 1/2" valve only. It's hard to say absolutely, since the head loss is a moving target. I may have incomplete information.0 -

FHVs!!!! YES!!!!
Personally I find the "relative" setting of TRV/FHV operators to be a GREAT plus!!! You adjust for a comfort level--NOT for some temperature!!!!0 -

In the Spirit of KISS
What can be simpler than a mod-con directly driving a fully TRVd/FHVd system using a single circulator?
Granted this requires some design effort and "different ways of thinking" on the part of the heating contractor, but isn't that part of the job?
Granted it will take considerable time and slight effort to adjust the heating curve for optimum efficiency vs. performance but any reasonable homeowner who wants to do this should be EASILY capable as long as they have access to the heating curve. If the homeowner has no interest in such you can merely set a curve based on your experience--just try to start a bit low and see if there's a problem before setting a high "guaranteed no callback" curve...0 -
