President Ford has passed

He had the appearance of integrity, yet his only significant act (pardoning Nixon) was the opposite.

After Cheney is impeached, I wonder if Bush will be able to install someone as VP who will make a deal to do what Ford did.

    One of the most decent

men to hold the office. Everything about him was the common touch. His beloved Betty put addiction admission and treatment into the light of day, removed the stigma and gave years of clean life to those who suffered behind closed doors. His public support of her while guarding the privacy of his family was an exercise in domestic statesmanship.

    He will be missed.

I've known a few people who, while being what may be considered powerful, have been down to earth. It's nice to have "real" people in places of power. He was one of those.

Unfortunately, I still picture Chevy Chase doing his impression of him on SNL.

    Ah yes

another compassionate liberal makes an anonymous post speaking ill of a President that has passed.

There is a BIG difference between you and me. When Jimmy Carter passes, I will not be spewing venom.

Now go back to the DU punk.

Chevy and Ford became buddies, and went golfing together a lot. Or so I read someplace....

R.I.P President Ford. Clean-up is rarely fun, but you did it well.

    you may not agree

People may not agree with his pardoning of Nixon but at that point Nixon left in discrace, justice wouldn't have been served by keeping it in the press. Ford made a tough decision and put it right out in front of the American People. A man of integrity will stand fast in the face of adversity. Few men today will publicly admit their beliefs.

A lot of people think that he was not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I think he was plenty smart. We could do a whole lot worse picking presidents in the future.

He had integrity, guts, and class. He didn't shirk public apperances after being shot at by the maniac broads.
Betty is also a big part of this and overcame difficult obstacles and handled it with class, started the "Betty Ford Clinic" and their kids wern't a bunch of spoiled brats. At least I don't remember hearing much about them.

He always amazed me that he just didn't age. If you look at pictures of him say 1999 he could pass for 60 and he was 86 then. He only aged in the past 4-5 years.

Plus he became friends with Carter who people may not like and that was maybe not the popular thing for Ford to do. Carter has done a lot of good with "Habitat for Humanaty "as well even if you don't agree with him.

    He will be missed.

Interesting article about Bob Woodward's interview with Ford, in today' paper:

    I wish

I wish that we had more people of his integrity and common decency involved in politics today. His forthrightness and basic "every day guy" attitude stand in stark contrast to the one he replaced and most of those who followed.

I'll never forget an incident that occurred when he was up here near Traverse City. His motorcade was on a rural stretch of road when it encountered a herd of dairy cows blocking the road as they made their daily crossing from pasture to the barn. As I recall, and this is a long time ago, the Secret Service guys were about going insane because they were stopped in the road. Ford meanwhile was hollering out from his car to see if the farmer needed help. That incident was pretty typical of his general attitude about most things. He was also a pretty decent football player for UofM and had a couple offers to go pro IIRC. A president or any guy that plays football at that level can't be too much of a wimp.

As far as the pardon goes.......I think that Ford realized that letting the whole WaterGate thing run its course in the courts would do nothing but polarize and distract our country for as long as it went on. And that would have been years. He saw that there were more pressing things to focus our national attention on, Vietnam vor one, and decided to just get on with the program. I remeber hearing that he made a comment to a local Grand Rapids politician to the effect that history would take care of Nixon in a manner that the courts couldn't touch.
