    In a word

    NO.

The temps coming out will melt the PVC.

It should be steel or copper.

That's what I thought. When the serviceman came for the annual cleaning/checkup, I asked him if the lenghth of the existing pipe on the relief was correct. (The attached steel pipe was only about 18"). SO, now he makes a proper length pipe out of the wrong material....I'd rather have the steel pipe.

  • Depending upon the inspectors interpretation...

the original pipe, within 18" of the floor is acceptable. (Here come the within 6" of the floor guys..., bring it on)

PVC, however is NOT an acceptable material for THAT relief valve waste, but is an accepted method for T&P relief valves on DHW heaters under certain codes.

Won't it be great when we have ONE code with which to comply???

    No

Brass and iron will corrode, look closly at the picture, pvc won't melt but if the pressure is suddenly increased it will explode, it will suddenly separate off the threads... done right...3 to 9 inches off the floor so that it can be visualized if it is doing its job, and so that a bucket cannot be placed under it, out of sight out of mind.

    I'd be happier

than a pig in mud if the code enforced in my area did away with the mandatory use of dielectric unions on boiler piping.

Hey a guy can dream can't he ?? It is Christmas after all.
