rinnai heater

i think he may be talking about rinnai's wall mounted direct vent convection heaters. never installed one, but from what i've heard they are quite comfortable and efficient for small spaces.

    rinnai heater

I currently have a 6 family building in CT. The commercial boiler is leaking and someone suggested I install separate propane gas wall mounted heaters. Can these be used as primary heat source for apartments? Thanks
  • I wouldn't...

but that's just my learned opinion.

The appliance is designed for a big flow rate and a big differential. When it see low flow rates and low differentials, it short cycles. Simple as that.

You MIGHT get the manufacturer to disagree with me, but if you talk to the people who have to handle warranty service, they agree with my position. It's a misapplication.

As a DHW heater, it works as advertised. As a space heater, it falls on its face.

Get a real boiler, preferrably a modulating/condensing boiler with a large reverse indirect for producing hot water (Thermomax) and you won't regret your decision.

I have installed them and they work well. But what size are the apartments and how many rooms? You won't get any distribution as the wall heater will probably only heat two rooms. Putting in 6 of those with piping the gas and wiring and flue is a little bit of work. I would go with the boiler if the heating system is otherwise ok. jmho

Are you talking about the floor mounted gas heaters or the on-demand dhw heater?

If its the floor mount units, I instaled one yesterday they are very easy to install and are real quiet. But, if you already have the piping in place for hydronic heat, why not just put a new boiler in. Put in a mod/con and watch your fuel bills drop.
