Would a section of fin tube put out as much heat with the cover off as on? We have a location where the covers were changed with a larger cover. Our service tech feels that is why it is not heating properly. I feel it should put out the same btu's with or without the cover on.....?

    Typically

any convector with a cover will perform better than one without. The taller the cover the more chimney effect and hence greater output. Of course, the cover should be reasonably not much wider than the element. Too wide and cooler air is bypassed around the element by induction, diluting the output.

  • Would not the heat output in btu's be the same? With or without the cover. In our case the residental cover was replaced with High Cap and is further away from the wall that the original

the more air you get across the fins the more ourput you will get that is why they put fans on radiators, kickspace heaters, condensor and evaporator coils. need to have a close front and back cover and the taller the faster the air will flow across. Also make sure the fins are in the right direction the air needs to go up through the fins

Output will certainly be much less without a cover.

Replacing the cover with one that extends further (than original) past the fins will also reduce output.

Manufacturers do test their designs and its in their best interest to maximize output using a minimum of material...

  • Fintube

The covers were replaced because it is a nursing home. Years ago a inspector wrote a violation for tops of fintubes being to hot. Somebody replaced the covers with taller covers.
