with a system that old you might want too start by checking for leaks in the floor. are your domestic water pipes buried in the slab?

I have a two zone radiant slab home built in 1956. The thermosats are set at 66° for the front of the home and 64° for the rear bedroom. The house is app 2000 sq. ft. with thermopane windows in Montery Bay, Ca.(not cold). The gas bill can get up to 230 therms in the winter for the boiler and hot water heater, I estimate an increase of 135 to 173 therms for heat in the winter months alone. The thermostats turn on the pump and boiler and run until the -60° water is heated to 140° and the slab warms up enough to turn the heat off. The temp in the house usually goes about 2° past the set temp.
Is there a more effcient way of setting this system up? I have heard about system that are always running their pumps and mixing the hot water into the zones to maintain a constant slab temp.

three things I would like to know before commenting:
    1. What is your heat load calculation for building?
    2. Your post is "boiler running constantly", what size, brand, model boiler?
    3. What type of piping arrangement, zone valves, zone pumps?

    Boiler

I don't know how to calulate load,. The boiler is the original one from 1956 , a cast iron Crane gas model with 120,000 BTU input and 96,000 BTU. output, working pressure 30 lbs. though I find it at 24 lbs. The system is rigid K copper, the pumps are two feet away on the return cold water side of the boiler, pumping toward the boiler. the manifold are just screw type flow adjustments.

    Hope this helps, Steve

PS Ithink my real question is how can I make this system more efficient to operate.
  • Can the dinosaur...

Replace it with a good modulating/condensing boiler and watch your gas bills reduce by a minimum of 30%, and possibly as high as 50%...

What major city are you near?
