The Art of Noise

Glad to hear that your quest for heat has finally found a happy ending!
Your posting shows that a lot of thought went into your heating system choices and presumably you will be very happy with the choices you made. The prestige is a neat boiler and with any luck, TT will start importing the other gear you identified as well. Like you, I like concentric venting kits because they can make installation easier. Plus, based on my product development experience, concentric vent terminals are the best way to vent.
Now, for that noise. Some of our circulators were noisy for two reasons... for one, they were mounted right on the header w/little to no piping in between, which can lead to flow turbulence. Secondly, our system pressure was too low, allowing air to come out of solution on the third floor, allowing the system to become air bound. Flushing the system and increasing the system pressure to 20psi solved the problem.
PS: In no sense? Nonsense!

Are noisy flow check valves common? (edited for clarity)
Okay, so first evening with the new piping and Prestige. All of a sudden I hear what sounds like a hurting circ. I open the cabinet, reach behind the swing-out cabinet (Hot Rod, I really don't think they need isoflages inside, in fact that might have a better chance at having an undetected leak - a bit of spilled water after draining the boiler won't do anything except drop on the spongy bottom - the computer swings out of the way/cabinet). What an incredibly well designed machine.
Anyway, I didn't know if the built-in black 15-58 had an IFC and I also wondered that if you were within 4D at the P/S intersection and had a drop to a valley of over 18", whether or not I'd care about a bit of heat migration. It would only matter in the summer, and the heating circuit actually has quite the U as well as 2 sets of ball valves (front and back - P/S and buffer, expansion etc. are all in behind) separating on the return side. There is already total separation on the supply - okay, so I'm gushing instead of explaining why I was wondering even if I need a flow check.
Anyway, the 15-58 doesn't have an IFC (a good way to do it when you want to build a Toyota boiler, the IFC or circ could fail and inside the boiler isn't a good place), so as strongly suggested by the wholesaler a spring loaded Apolla/conwhateverthebrandis flow check was added... and it is hammering like a jackhammer!!!
When it first started it was loudest near the boiler, so I opened the front and switched speeds on the circ. The noise changed... voil0 -
what planet did you say you are from ? lol0 -
Thanks Constantin

Good Gravy Unir
Take a breath my friend. Ha! I'm glad you are so excited about your project. I enjoy installing these mod cons too. I told my wife the other day that I consider the proper piping of a boiler an art form, and she let me know she thought I was putting on airs. Hmmmp! I suppose it's her job to keep me on the ground. (loo, loo, loo) I am looking forward to seeing pictures too. As I've told you before I've had great success with the Prestige. I recently found out about it's boost function. What a great feature. Get rid of that noise though, this is supposed to be silent warmth.WW

The Art of Noise is here...
... that PS was a reference to one of their albums, with that title. I thought you were making a reference to them, so I thought I'd reference back. You might remember them best for the Peter Gunn theme, their remake of Prince's Kiss with Tom Jones, or Moments in Love.0 -
I was...
Yes I was playing on their name, however I'm not as familiar with their songs as you are. Outside of Peter Gunn, I probably wouldn't have caught your joke. You learn a lot here... hydronics and otherwise. Thanks...0 -
Yes indeed they can be noisy
especially at lower pressures. I have mainly used them on DW well systems, at the pressure tank inlet, as a backup for the pump check. Vibrations from the spring.0
