the pipegoing to that bathroom is insulated. not sure whats behind wall leaving the basement. I supply valve is fully open. The rad in bathroom is a tall 3 section rad. the rad was alittle unbalanced so i put a 1/2 thick piece of wood under it to steady it. That seemed to work for awhile ,but have noticed sound coming back. It happenes most every time the boiler comes out of set back, and even when the thermostat calls for heat. thanks

balancing a 1 pipe steam system

Ok so I buy this book "I Got steam heat". I insualte my piping in the basement. I set my pressure control no more then 2 psi.I have main vents in place. I make sure all rad's are pitched towards supply valve. Put new gordon air vents. I do all the things this book tells me that should be done to make your system run quite, and get heat to raD's faster. So why when my boiler kicks on in the morning after about 5 minutes i get a series of 3 bangs from upstairs bathroom, and rads in bedroom let out a gush of air when the boiler shuts off. As alice would say to ralf on the honeymooner's. "Oh how i wish you had an explanation for that ralf"

    does your piping for

the upstairs bathroom have a sag in it? is it the right size? is it insulated? is your firing rate on the boiler to much? does it only do it in the morning coming out of set back? is the inlet valve open fully?
