CO- it's not just in the boiler room

Well this has been a long time coming and I will be curious to see if it goes anywhere. On the heals of a recent residential CO death, it seems that the time might be right to get people a little more educated. This story is not complete, but it's a start.

Do you test all appliances on routine calls? How do you protect yourself against CO exposure?

    I test all boiler installs

for service work we are not "required" by law to test. Also most people in my area are not testing including the gas company and there "private" off shoot in the service business.

I do offer testing as an option for just specific equipment or the whole residence.

Since we have no authority I have the home owner sign an information and consent form showing what we are looking for and what we may do if we find a problem.

Most people do not want to take a chance and wave the test.

I have had several cases that I have found high co in the thousands and the gas company or other contractor came in after me said the "draft" was good and started the equipment back up.

    Frustrating

Good article, its just fire marshal’s comments that infer UL approved alarms work well and the victims must have done something wrong that is frustrating…

"Overall, they're good tools," he said. "They're very effective. But they need to be properly installed and kept charged if they are to work, he said.”

He doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about…..
