Make sure you put a cap at the end of that pipe. If someone (think little fingers) pops that valve open whilst the boiler is running or hot they can be seriously burned or scalded by not only steam but boiling water under pressure.
My boiler has a hose-cock with an matching cap, tightened more than any little fingers can possible turn...

skim tapping
I recently had a steam boiler installed which included a skim tapping to get rid of oil and rust. It is an one and a half inch steel pipe with a ball valve. The boiler instructions say to remove the skim tap upon the completion of the skimming process and plug the boiler tap opening.
If I do not remove the tap, will there be a problem-leaks?? My boiler installer is among the missing and I do not have a large enough pipe wrench to remove and plug.

put a plug in ball valve and leave it for future cleaning. can't hurt.0
