The Lost Art of Steam Heat book...

Dan,
I had a crazy thought...Would it be possible for you to have a link to offer chapters of the LOST ART OF STEAM BOOK to purchase online...This would be for homeowners that don't need the entire book but some reference material...I as the Weil-McLain Rep in North East PA can't tell you how many time I copy different chapters and fax them out to homeowners and contractors which either never heard of this book or have no acccess to this information...If it was avaiable here on Heating Help.com people could go out and purchase a copy of the section or sections they need...I know it might seem silly but it just might help...Let me know your thoughts...It might not even be possible...But it's at least worth something to mention to you for consideration...
Thank in advance for your consideration...

Istead of giving out free literature why not suggest that they PURCHASE the book ??? if i bought it , why should they get it for free ?? the data in that little book is priceless. what you are doing might not even be legal.0 -
Yep,
that would sure be nice. It is, after all, copyrighted material, and my means of making a living. I appreciate it when folks consider that, and respect my rights as an author.Retired and loving it.0 -
The more Dan stares at his birdfeeder the better off we all are.
I would never wear a giant dead man skull logo near a customer, or anywhere besides the inside of my house, but if theres a opportunity to keep Dan at his kitchen table, I'm all over it.
The book is simply NOT an expensive investment for any home owner or heating professional given the wealth of information between its covers... AND it helps fight breast cancer!
Win win situation

lost art
jim, why not,at a relativly small cost to your company, buy and give out copies of this great resource? or loan them. my guess is when you stop back to get your book they would gladly pay you the purchase price.the goodwill and $$$$ales it generates would be well worth it. not to mention supporting Dan, without whose hard work we would all be much more ignorant. rob p.s. thanks Dan, for all YOU do.0 -
Copyright
Not to pile on, but copyright, intellectual property, goes to the root of our discourse with one-another. Without assurances of the sanctity of published works, the right of an author for payment and attribution, such works of any value would cease.
Software piracy is another equivalent, to make the point.
Back to books. To copy another's work and distribute it without pre-arranged consideration (whether a royalty or attribution, whatever is agreed to) is illegal under Federal law. Any time one watches a DVD or Video at home this is made clear by the FBI warning.
Maybe this did not cross your mind, Jim, and your distribution of sections of The Lost Art, countless times even, was well-intentioned. But the end result is the same. I hope you can make this right.
My $0.02

I
have zero sympathy for "contractors which either never heard of this book or have no acccess to this information..."
They don't care enough to put in the effort to find out,any information they want or need is readily available to those who do their homework. These are the same guys who have others do their heat losses and layouts. Why not send them the link to here and let them find out for themselves?

thanks, weil-mclain- you did good.
weil-mc lain finally gives something away [but not to the plumbers who keep them in business ]but it is something that does't even belong to them. how ironic.0 -
I agree with,
everyone on this subject! I would NEVER even think of giving out information like this, least of all, making copies! Ya, we all refer to pg. #s, but thats-it. If these guys want this info, it`s right there for them, just buy the book! PS- Dan, I`ll soon need another, the "bindings" are falling apart! Dave0 -
here is a thought for you....
Just for the heck of it, how about buying some of Dans Books, donating them to the local Library...then it could help more than one person and save you countless hours of valuable time printing
Dan , may have to send you more than one over the years as things tend to dissapear from the shelves of the local library...
one good thing about the library is that they often will replace a book when it is lost or stolen...
if the borrower likes the books they can always purchase a copy *~/:)

Sorry...
Dan,
I am sorry if I did something wrong...
I never wanted to cause such a problem...I just thought I was helping out a contractor showing them the correct way to use TSP or MEC and how you clean a boiler...I would always tell him to go to Heating Help.com and check it out and buy a copy of Lost Art Of Steam...No all people listen to some advise you give...
Again I am sorry for causing a rift....

Jim,
I make my living selling books that I write and self-publish. Each of my books is copyrighted, which means that you can't copy sections of them and give them away to people, no matter how good your intentions. It's actually against the law to do this. When you do give away relevant portions of my books, you remove the recipient's reason to buy that book. Why buy when they can get it for free? As a result, I don't make a sale, and it's the sale of those books that make this website possible.
I'm hoping that you now understand this.Retired and loving it.0 -
It's not like Dan is charging a fortune for his books. In fact, I would say all his books and seminars are reasonably priced.
Anyone who is in the business knows this(unless there under a rock) Let the cheapskates buy them.
