What kind of boiler and is it residentual or commercel, is it a package boiler or a sectional that was put together on site. maybe a picture or two would be grand.

Replacing \"section\" of steam boiler OK?

3 year old boiler leaking. Some talk now about manufacturer (under warranty) replacing the defective section only. Sounds OK to me. Should I have any concerns? Thanks for any comments.
  • additional to Daves question...

Why did the boiler section(s) leaks in that short amount of time? How old was the previous boiler? Got any underground pipings?

    Replacing sections

IMO--I've often thought of replacing a bad section a little like replacing a bad shoe...

David, its a residential boiler. Was delivered as one boiler - not delivered in sections. Not sure yet why current boiler leaks above water line. Previous boiler did not leak and lasted 25 years plus.

rjb, there are no underground pipings. Why do you ask?

    Hmmmmm

If it were i, i would see about the hole boiler being replaced, changing a section is more work than it sounds, a lot can go wrong on a small residentual boiler section change.

PS, Just wondering witch boiler MFG would have a section replaced on a factory assembled boiler and who is going to pay the labor??

Charles, I would rather have an entire new boiler but may not be entitled to one under the warranty.

Some steam heating systems have buried return pipes, unknowily, there may be a leak(s) and unusally high water make up will causes premature boiler failure.. What's brand is new boiler?

David, have you not heard of replacing a "section" of boiler? Are you guessing here, or do you have actual experience with replacing a section of boiler?

    Yea... i've seen a few

With a residentual boiler there is only on set of binding rods , you have to lay the boiler down and work from the stack, you mess up the alinement and you will be doing it all over again, if its a push nipple boiler you need to prep both surfaces before assembly. still theres section seals for flue gases. if its the rear section you have to replace the chamber target wall and so on.......

rjbphd, what you say about underground pipe leaks may be true, but it does not seem to apply to my original question. Thanks for responding though.
