We Love our Steam Heat

Since we moved to our 1915-ish house two years ago I've been doing everything that I can to improve the one-pipe steam system bit by bit - pitching radiators, monkeying with vents, adding mambo Gortons to the mains, insulating mains, regular blow-downs, you know the drill. All of which was learned from Dan's books and the collective wisdom of the Wall.

Over the past weekend temps dipped down well into the low teens overnite here in Indy, which is pretty cold for us this early in the season, and rose only to the 20s during the day. I am happy to report that the result has been a warm and cozy home and a happy wife, with the outlook good for the future.

It's not perfect yet - the near boiler piping is kinda goofy (but it works), and it probably needs drained and cleaned, and the venting isn't completely right yet. But I have the Gill/Pajek book so at least it won't be a complete crapshoot like when we first moved in. There's still a bit of vent hiss here and there, which sort of serves as a reminder that heat is on its way. It also reminds me that there's still improvements to be made. But the gas bill seems to be slowly but steadily decreasing, so I can't complain too much, I guess.

So here's many, many thanks to Dan H. and the Wallies for generously providing this educational, entertaining (and strangely addictive) resource!

    Love is in the air

With the cold of the winter approaching, hugging a radiator seems like the best idea.

I'm not too far away from you, I'm in Dayton, and I know what hit us yesterday. Brrrrr. Have a warm season.

    It boils down to this

Most of us "wetheads" are in this trade and hang out on "The Wall" for the following reasons.

1:We enjoy working with our hands and seeing tangible proof of our efforts.

2: We like to leave something better than we found it.

3: We like being involved and working in a relatively technical field of endeavor

4: Last but not least, we just enjoy helping people

I know from meeting a bunch of the guys here that #4 is true!!

Glad you're making good progress on your system. The payback, consisting of improved comfort and economy, are great!

I'm not in the Trades, just a reasonably handy and technically oriented HO who enjoys knowing and understanding the whys and wherefores about things. And it's important to me to be an active participant in maintaining the house.

When we bought the house I was initially disappointed that it was steam because I had worked in a downtown building on city steam with a fantastically neglected one-pipe system. I thought the hissing and the spitting and the anvil chorus were inevitable. But then I found the Wall and you know the rest.

have you tracked your fuel consumption to see how much less you use?
