How do you guys figure adding in the demand created by the hydronic loop on an EDR calculation for replacement?

Size for steam
and then look at the pick-up factor. That's what you have available for the hydronic zone.Retired and loving it.0 -
You don't want to add anything, John
All there is available is the difference between the actual EDR and the actual output of the steam boiler (which usually is a little greater than the actual pick-up factor).
Any more load will effect balance on the steam side, and any extra boiler size can cause water level problems.

I don't care what Mr. Sweeney says...
you guys are alright after all.

Yeah but..
I may be making this more complicated than it is, and I have never seen this happen, but:
What if the loop is very large and pulls a substantial amount of heat from the boiler. Couldn't the loop prevent the water from boiling if the input is only sized for the steam side?

If you keep it
within the pick-up factor it will work, John.Retired and loving it.0 -
I think...
...I may have miscommunicated my question.
The hydro loop is existing. The boiler is existing.
I have an EDR of about 400 sq. ft. on the steam side but about 30 feet of baseboard element in a cellar zone.
I'm sizing for a replacement and must renergize the loop as did the 1000 sq. ft. boiler I'm removing.

Ahh, I see.
Multiply the actual EDR installed by 240 (as you did), add the btu output of the baseboard, and see if you are still below the gross steam output on the boiler that you selected. Don't add the pickup factor, in this equation, it's included in the baseboard amount.

Great
So 30' of fin tube (30 x ~580btu) is 17,400 divided by 240 = ~72 sq. ft.
Add 72 to my EDR.
Or
Convert my EDR to BTU and add the 17,400 to get my total BTU load.
Check?

number two
afterwards, you still need to make sure that the EDR rating on the new boiler is the same or bigger as the installed steam radiator's EDR, as always.
